When the AC is running but your home still feels sticky or warm, the problem is usually not a mystery. In the Salt Lake Valley, this often shows up on the first really hot stretch of the season or after a system has been working hard for days. Before you assume you need a new unit, check a few things that often affect cooling.
Look At Airflow
Start with the filter. A dirty filter can choke airflow and make the system feel weak. Then check supply vents and return grilles to make sure furniture, rugs, or dust buildup are not blocking them. If some rooms feel much warmer than others, that can point to duct issues, a blower problem, or an airflow imbalance. Weak airflow is a clue, not something to ignore.
Check The Outdoor Unit
Go outside and look at the condenser. It should have clear space around it and clean fins. If cottonwood fluff, weeds, or grass are packed against the unit, it cannot release heat well. You can gently clear debris from around it, but do not bend the fins or open the cabinet. If the unit is running loudly, cycling off quickly, or covered in ice, stop using it and get it checked.
Know What Needs Repair
If the AC is still running but not cooling well, possible causes include low refrigerant, a failing capacitor, a dirty coil, or a compressor issue. Those are not good guess-and-hope repairs. Northline Heating & Air works on AC systems for homes in Salt Lake City, Murray, Sandy, West Jordan, Draper, and Holladay, and the goal is to find the real cause without making the job more complicated than it needs to be. If the system is getting worse instead of better, have it looked at before the next heat wave hits.
